Why a benefit for Allen Cohen?

Allen Cohen has Hepatitis C, and liver cancer as a consequence of that. His tumors have been very responsive to localized chemotherapy, but this is a stop-gap measure designed to keep his tumors small enough that he will remain a candidate for a liver transplant when an organ donor becomes available. He is now on the short list. In addition, Allen has severe arthritis and will have a hip replacement soon. His doctors are debating whether to do the hip surgery before or after the transplant. Allen is insured by Kaiser and Kaiser will pay for the various surgeries.
The dilemma is that Allen has made his living for some years as a substitute school teacher and has been unable to work for some months now and obviously will not be able work for the next few months to a year. He needs funds to pay rent, insurance premiums. accumulated bills, food and transportation.
